A woman who was marrying a big Port Vale Football Club fan decided to give him a wedding day to remember by inviting the team's mascot to give her away.

Nicola Williamson decided to do something really special for Dave Walker, so she organised for Boomer the dog to come to the ceremony and walk her down the aisle.

The guests were stunned when the massive fluffy canine appeared alongside the blushing bride, but Mr Walker told the Stoke Sentinel he was very pleased with the gesture.

"I always have a laugh watching Boomer messing about with the fans," he commented, adding that he will never look at the mascot in the same way at games in future.

It is not the first time that couples have had strange and unusual guests in fancy dress at their nuptials. Many opt for superhero-themed days, while others just choose one person in costume.

Ben Skelton from South Carolina recently chose the cow mascot from fast food chain Chick-fil-A as his best man.
